Fruits and seeds of Cariniana ianeirensis.
Fruit and seeds of Cariniana ianeirensis based on Jardim et al. 4652 from Bahia, Brazil. Note that the seeds are oriented the way they are attached in the fruit, i.e., at the tip of the seed wing. This image represents a single fruit cut in medial longitudinal section by the collector.
Seeds of Cariniana ianeirensis.
Close-up of seeds of Cariniana ianeirensis based on Jardim et al. 4652 from Bahia, Brazil. The seed on the left is 1.6 cm long. Note that the seed is rounded and narrowly carinate on the surface away from the columella (seed on left) and more-or-less flat on the surface facing the columella (seed on right).
Leaves of eastern Brazilian species of Cariniana.
Leaves of the eastern Brazilian species of Cariniana. All shown in abaxial views except C. ianeirensis which is in adaxial view. Note that the leaves of C. legalis and C. parvifolia are the only species of Cariniana that consistently have revolute leaf blade bases. These domatia are present in fresh leaves from a very early age and appear to be occupied by mites (S. A. Mori, field observatons).
Stem and leaves of Cariniana ianeirensis.
Stem and leaves of Cariniana ianeirensis based on M. Lemes et al. s.n. from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Note the gray stems relatively free of lenticels and the very finely decurrent leaf blades onto the petiole.
Sprouts from running buttresses.
Sprouts of Cariniana ianeirensis based on M. Lemes et al. s.n. from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The sprouts indicate damage, most likely caused by humans, that cut or damaged the trees for one reason or the other.

Habit of Cariniana ianeirensis.
Base of trunk of an individual of Cariniana ianeirensis showing running buttresses based on M. Lemes et al. s.n. from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Note that the base of the tree is split into multiple trunks. This probably does not occur in forest areas. The person in the photo is W. da Silva.
