Base of trunk of an individual of Cariniana ianeirensis showing running buttresses based on M. Lemes et al. s.n. from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Note that the base of the tree is split into multiple trunks. This probably does not occur in forest areas. The person in the photo is W. da Silva.
