Description:
A medial longitudinal section of a bud of Lecythis zabucajo as illustrated in Thompson, J. M. 1927. A study of advancing gigantism with staminal sterility with special reference to the Lecythidaceae. Publ. Hartley Bot. Lab. 4: 5-44. The bract subtends the pedicel and the bracteoles are the point where the pedicel articulates if the flower does not set fruit.

Bract and bracteoles of Couroupita guianensis based on an unvouchered cultivated tree at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, Coral Gables, Florida. Note the two bracteoles directly below the hypanthium and the bract at the base of the pedicel. The bract is caducous. The pedicel articulates just above the attachment of the bracteoles.
